Guardiola’s Bayern Munich Humiliated by Barcelona

Pep Guardiola endured an unforgiving return to the Camp Nou, where he won three league titles and two ChampionsLeague crowns during four season with Barcelona. Now, though, former teammate Luis Enrique is manager of Barcelona, and appears finally to be easing in to the role.

The second of this week’s Champions League semi finals really stood out in the football results from yesterday (Wednesday 6 May). Nobody expected Barcelona to beat Bayern Munich comfortably with a 3-0 score line. Of course, anything is possible when your strike force is comprised of Leo Messi, Luis Suárez, and Neymar.

Despite holding 55% of possession, Bayern could only generate eight attempts on goal –none of which were on target. Meanwhile, Barcelona created 15 total attempts and hit the target on eight of those.

After 77 minutes, Leo Messi made the breakthrough. He then added a second only three minutes later. Neymar completed the scoring at 3-0 with a goal in stoppage time.

Real Madrid Lose Champions League First Leg to Juventus

bingo

Real Madrid are still on course to retain their Champions League trophy, but they will have a tricky second leg to overcome against Juventus. In the yesterday match results, Real Madrid lost 2-1 away to Juventus in the first leg.

Carlos Tevez and Álvaro Morata proved to be too tough for the Real defence to handle. Former Los Blancos player Morata opened the scoring after only eight minutes, but surprisingly held back from celebrating in the face of the club that released him.

Real would attempt to fight back, though, and were rewarded with an invaluable away goal courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo after 27 minutes. At half-time, it appeared that Real could get the better of Juventus.

But before Real could scored a second goal, Tevez scored after 57 minutes. The oft-moody Argentine gave his side a victory, but at the expense of an away goal that could be costly in the second leg.

Arsenal Beat Hull City 3-1 in Premier League

Any faint hope of Arsenal winning the Premier League was extinguished with Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday. Nevertheless, that disappointing result did not stop Arsenal from notching up yet another victory. The Gunners easily overcame an uninspired Hull City to secure a 3-1 result, in the football results from yesterday (Monday 4 May).

The excellent Alexis Sánchez opened the scoring for Arsenal with a goal after 28 minutes. Aaron Ramsey scored just five minutes later to give them a 2-0 lead. That was then increased to 3-0 with another goal from Sánchez after 46 minutes.

Arsenal dominated 68% of possession against Hull, which allowed for them to control the game with relative comfort. However, Hull managed to claim a consolation goal from Stephen Quinn after 56 minutes. That 3-1 result has moved Arsenal level with Man City on 70 points, but the Gunners have a game in hand.

Chelsea Crowned Premier League Champions

A point would have been enough for the Blues to reclaim the Premier League title, but they managed to take all three with a narrow 1-0 victory over London rivals Crystal Palace.

From yesterday’s matches (Sunday 3 May), Chelsea contributed another dull result. Of course, José Mourinho did not care because he had another Premier League crown to celebrate.

Elsewhere in the Premier League results, Man City moved three points clear of Arsenal – who are still to play Hull on Monday night – with a 1-0 win courtesy of Sergio Agüero.

Going back to Saturday, Man Utd left the door open for Liverpool in the Champions League by enduring an abysmal 1-0 defeat to West Brom at Old Trafford.

After conceding a deflected free kick, the Reds squandered a chance to draw level when Robin van Persie missed a penalty. Man Utd lead Liverpool by four points with three games to play.

Valencia Fail to Make Advantage Pay in La Liga

Valencia failed to make their game in hand count in La Liga. Los Che had an opportunity to move two points ahead of Sevilla in the battle to claim a Champions League qualifying spot.

Despite moving into fourth, Valencia are level on 69 points with Sevilla. Los Che had been pitted against Rayo Vallecano in yesterday’s matches (Thursday 30 April), but they could not manage an away win against their mid-table opponents.

Valencia managed to control 56% of possession, while crafting 13 attempts on goal. The only problem was could not outscore Rayo Vallecano in a game that finished 1-1.

Rayo had opened the scoring with an early goal after 19 minutes. Valencia were unable to make a levelling breakthrough until 66 minutes into the game. Los Che could not take advantage of a Rayo red card after 71 minutes, with one of their own sent off just a few minutes later.

Chelsea Clinch Leicester City Victory

Chelsea brought Leicester City’s four-game winning streak to an inevitable end on Wednesday night (29 April), all but securing the Premier League title for the Blues. Four games remain and Chelsea are 13 points ahead of Man City and Arsenal. Of course, the Gunners do still have a game in hand, but that will likely prove academic.

Although Leicester’s loss was inevitable in the UK football results last night, there was a surprise in the manner of the result. The Foxes had actually managed to take a 1-0 lead into the break after scoring just before halftime. However, Didier Drogba quickly equalised after the break to restore order.

John Terry then scored with his right from a corner in the 79th minute, putting Chelsea 2-1 up. Ramires then assured the Blues of all three points by adding a third in the 83rd minute. Chelsea can now clinch the league with a win over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Liverpool Blow Champions League in Hull City Loss

Liverpool blew an opportunity to maintain their Champions League challenge in the UK football results last night (Tuesday 28 April). Entering last weekend, Liverpool knew that they could be at least three points closer to Man Utd if they won both games.

Of course, the weekend did not start off well when Liverpool had to accept a 0-0 draw away at West Brom. Fortunately for manager Brendan Rodgers, though, Man Utd would lose 3-0 to Everton on Sunday.

That gave Liverpool an opportunity to win against Hull City on Tuesday to move four points behind Man Utd. However, Liverpool lost 1-0 away to Hull on Tuesday night and the gap remains at seven points. Man Utd are all but assured of Champions League qualification.

Liverpool held 69% possession and had nine shots on target in a game where Hull defender Michael Dawson headed the winning goal from a corner after 36 minutes.

Valencia Targeting Champions League Qualification

Outside of title-chasers Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid, an interesting battle is underway for the final Champions League qualifying spot in La Liga. Valencia currently hold fourth place, while Europa League holders Sevilla occupy fifth.

From yesterday’s matches (Monday 27 April), Valencia took a major stride forward by beating Granada 4-0 at home and moving two points clear of Sevilla. At present, five games remain in the La Liga season.

Valencia are in prime position to extend their advantage in this weekend’s La Liga games. Los Che will play in a winnable home game against struggling Eibar. Meanwhile, Sevilla play at home against Champions League holders Real Madrid.

After going through a multimillion-pound takeover last summer, Champions League qualification is the number one priority for Valencia. Los Che will be unable to attract exciting new talent in the next transfer window if they fall short this season.

Everton Stun Man Utd in 3-0 Win – 26 April 2022

Everton provided the most stunning outcome of the Premier League’s yesterday match results. Playing on Sunday (26 April), the Reds needed a win to retake third place in the league. But that was not to be. They looked decidedly off for most of the game and could not get back to winning ways.

Man Utd played like they were supposed to in dominating 65% of possession, but they just couldn’t finish any of their chances. The Reds had 17 total shots compared to nine for Everton. Meanwhile, the Toffees were able to finish their chances and win 3-0.

James McCarthy got the home side off to a stunning start by scoring early after just five minutes. Having rattled Man Utd, Everton were then able to get another when John Stones scored on 35 minutes. Kevin Mirallas then put the match beyond with a goal on 74 minutes.

Europa League Semi-Finalists Decided – 23 April 2022

After being mocked by his weight midweek by Sampdoria’s president, Rafa Benítez did his talking on the pitch by guiding his Napoli players to the Europa League semi-finals. The former Liverpool and Chelsea manager oversaw a 2-2 home draw that gave his side a 6-3 aggregate win over Wolfsburg.

Fiorentina were the second Italian team to progress to the semi-finals. They led 2-1 on aggregate into the tense final stages of their game before Juan Manuel Vargas sealed their victory with a late goal.

The next of the football results from yesterday saw Europa League holders Sevilla progress to the semi-finals with a 4-3 aggregate win over Zenit St Petersburg. A 2-2 away draw proved to be enough for the Spaniards.

Dnipro represent the surprise package of the tournament after making it into their first-ever Europa League semi-final. They managed to sneak a 1-0 win over Club Bruges after a goalless first leg.
